Disney’s revolve swims to $1.5B from 3D and 2D platforms after $100M launch
Disney’s new revolve swimming game, starring Ariel, the royal penguin, and the dragon Ariel, is now available in 3D for the first time.
The game, which launched at the end of September, is Disney’s first-ever full-motion-video game, Disney’s chief creative officer and senior vice president of marketing and digital entertainment, Jim Henson, said in a statement.
It is Disney Interactive’s first 3D movie to launch at the time, and it’s a rare example of Disney and Henson embracing 3D as a means to promote their animated movies.
Disney’s Frozen debuted in 3-D in 2014 and was the first major animated film to be released in 3.2D, a more advanced format than 2D.
Disney said it is releasing the game on its digital platform and will offer the full experience to consumers through digital downloads starting this month.
“As Disney expands into new and exciting areas, we will continue to innovate and innovate on all fronts to ensure that our fans get the most out of Disney’s immersive experiences,” Henson said in the statement.
The company said it will use Disney’s own proprietary technology for the game, and that the game will support motion tracking, motion-detection, and facial recognition.
The games launch coincides with Disney’s annual investor day on Tuesday.
“We are very excited to see how the Disney fans respond to the new Disney game,” said Bill O’Reilly, chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company.
“It is a very unique experience, and we look forward to the continued development of Disney Interactive with this new technology.”
The company has not yet disclosed how much the game costs.
It will be available in theaters across the U.S. on September 25, and Disney said the game is “a new, first-of-its-kind interactive experience that is built from the ground up with a unique and engaging story.”
The game features “deep-dive gameplay that delivers the most immersive and interactive gaming experience to date,” Disney said.
The new game will be released on October 27, Disney said in its statement.
“Disney Interactive has an ambitious slate of projects on tap with new content for the platform,” Disney Interactive CFO Steve Satterberg said in an interview with The Wall St. Journal.
“Its an opportunity for us to bring new experiences and technologies to consumers.
The world is a bigger place now than ever before, and now is the perfect time to launch a new immersive game.”
